Brampton City Football Club (BCFC) is committed to the safety and well-being of all its players. In alignment with current Health Canada and federal legislation, this policy outlines the protocols for concussion management to ensure early recognition, appropriate treatment, and safe return to play for youth soccer players.
2. Scope
This policy applies to all players, coaches, team staff, volunteers, and parents/guardians associated with BCFC.
3. Definitions
- Concussion: A brain injury caused by a blow to the head or body that results in a temporary disruption of normal brain function. Symptoms can vary and may include headaches, dizziness, confusion, nausea, or visual disturbances.
- Return to Play (RTP): A medically supervised process through which an athlete gradually resumes participation in physical activity following a concussion.
4. Immediate Action and Reporting
- On-Field Response: If a player sustains a hit to the head or body and exhibits any signs or symptoms of a concussion, the player must be removed from play immediately.
- No Return Same Day: A player suspected of having a concussion shall not return to play on the same day, regardless of the severity or absence of symptoms following the incident.
- Notification: Coaches or team staff must inform the player's parent/guardian about the suspected concussion as soon as possible. The incident must be documented and reported to the BCFC staff.
5. Medical Assessment
- A player suspected of having a concussion must seek a medical evaluation from a healthcare professional experienced in concussion management. The player cannot return to any club activities until they have received written clearance from a medical professional.
6. Return to Play Protocol
BCFC follows a gradual, medically-supervised Return to Play protocol. The steps are as follows:
Step 1: Rest
- Complete rest, both physical and cognitive, until the player is symptom-free.
Step 2: Light Aerobic Activity
- Light exercise such as walking or stationary cycling at a slow to medium pace. No resistance training.
Step 3: Sport-Specific Activity
- Running drills or other specific activities without any risk of head impact.
Step 4: Non-Contact Training
- Full training drills without body contact. Increased intensity.
Step 5: Full Contact Practice
- Following medical clearance, the player can participate in normal training activities with body contact.
Step 6: Return to Play
- The player may return to full game play.
-Medical Clearance: Written clearance from a healthcare professional is required before progressing to Step 5 and full participation.
7. Communication and Record Keeping
- All concussion-related incidents, assessments, and RTP protocols must be documented and retained by BCFC.
- Communication regarding a player’s concussion status will be maintained between coaches, medical professionals, parents/guardians, and the player.
8. Roles and Responsibilities
- Coaches/Team Staff: Responsible for removing players from play, reporting incidents, and following RTP protocols.
- Parents/Guardians: Responsible for ensuring medical evaluation and adherence to the RTP protocol.
- Players: Expected to report symptoms and follow medical advice.
